About the photo: In mid-March 2010, Bill Wolff and I (and thousands of others) attended the CCC Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. I stayed at a hotel that was across the bridge in Indiana, and the hotel had a shuttle that would take me back and forth to and from Louisville, and each time, driving across the bridge. As we rode on the bridge, I noted folks walking and jogging the mile length of the bridge. On my last night in Louisville, I decided to walk the bridge back to my hotel. This was a risky decision, as I have a (fairly mild) fear of heights. But I thought to myself, "if they [joggers and walkers] can do it, you can, too."
So I started on my one-mile walk. As I stepped onto the bridge's sidewalk, I looked over and noted construction workers passing metal pipes to one another. I recognized their risk: they were elevated several stories above the ground, the were passing probably heavy metal bars up to a fellow construction worker. The bars could have fallen, hitting the constructions workers or passersby below, or the workers could have fallen off the scaffolds. There was risk all around.
Yet they continued on with their work. Fearless. I crossed the bridge thinking about the construction workers. They took measured risks. So could I.
