About the photo: Bill and I both attended the Springsteen Symposium on September 24-27. On Saturday afternoon, before the Stone Pony Concert, we walked around Asbury Park and noted Springsteen's "City of Ruin." We took hundreds of photographs between us. Our assignment for this week on "Composing with Images" was to find a photograph that we took over the weekend that relates to Springsteen's lyrics. I chose this one of an abandoned school bus.
The side of the bus had the school's or the district's name blackened out. I'm calling it a bus from "redacted high school." As Bill and I walked around the bus, we speculated how long it had been there (the state license tag said '01), so maybe eight years? We thought that even with most of the windows broken the bus might have night-time occupants (a family? a single person?). We thought a lot of things. As I walked around to the back of the bus, I looked through the back windows to note the contents inside. I could see the broken glass, the torn seat cushions, and the sign that read: "Absolutely no food or drinks on the bus" and the listing on green paper of the bus rules. Through the front windows of the bus, I could see the condominiums that have been constructed across the river.
If one had to move from the redacted high school bus-- indeed, from the back of the bus-- across the river to the new condos, it would, certainly, be "a long walk home."
